My Speeches
My Maiden Speech
I was fortunate to be elected as the Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich in 2017, my home constituency. My first speech in the House of Commons was where I made myself heard in Westminster and stated my commitment to fairer funding for Cheshire East Schools, the much needed investment in Crewe, the essential support for British workers, ending the gender pay gap for women, whilst never forgetting where I have come from.
The Conservatives’ Trail of Broken Promises
The Tories have repeatedly misled Parliament and the public by claiming that they will fix their broken care system since my election in 2017, yet have taken no action whatsoever. In January 2019, two years after Theresa May’s false promise to produce a Green Paper for Parliament, nothing has changed. Instead, their broken policies continue to neglect regular people in need in Crewe and Nantwich as well as the rest of the UK.
Save Our Firefighters
Firefighters are one of our most important workers and save lives on a daily basis, but suffer greatly under a Conservative government with constant relentless cuts that put firefighter jobs at risk. It is not only jobs that are at risk, it is the lives of the people they save, and the firefighters themselves and their families. Here I speak with firefighters and their families in my constituency as well as my colleagues in Westminster to gain an understanding of the harmful effects of Tory cuts towards firefighters, and how a Labour government will put it to an end.
Breathing Space & Mental Health
The link between debt and mental health is well established. Individuals who are barely keeping their heads above water are more likely to suffer from a variety of mental illnesses. This is sadly prominent in Crewe which is regarded as one of the most indebted places in the country. I am a firm supporter of a debt respite scheme that will benefit the country economically, but more importantly improve the mental health of my constituents in Crewe and across the country.
Universal Credit
The Conservative government is completely detached from working people in my constituency and across the country, and Universal Credit is an example of this. A system that supposedly incentivises people to get back in to the workplace, something that the government is unfamiliar with, drags people down rather than helps them up through the low wages, high childcare costs, huge rental expenses, and extortionate bills. I have personally witnessed the failure of Universal credit in Crewe and Nantwich, and as somebody who has lived off the previous tax credit system, I will always oppose the Conservatives’ out of touch system that neglects lives.
